Video game controllers are significantly important in regards to game-play and the experience of playing a video game. Many of my own memories playing video games include the use of the controller included with each game. I cannot think about Dance Dance Revolution without the dance-pad controller required for the game (And I can never forget my mom yelling at me for stomping on the floor, disrupting her downstairs). With some games, I have been immersed to the point I would respond these games by moving. I find myself moving, even if I am watching someone else play a video game. I would watch my step sister play Resident Evil 2, and I would lean in towards the screen when there was a corner and we did not know what was behind it. I would also jump back when a zombie would make a surprise appearance. I still move with the video games I play. In Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze, Whan Woong Kim, and Darshak Patel's 2007 article, Does body movement engage you more in digital game play? And Why?, they discuss the significance of video game controller design and how environmental factors affect your immersion experience while playing a game. (above) Engagement model summarizing the various theories. The figure is modified from Chen et al. [11]’s figure, which focused mainly on game usability. (Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze, Whan Woong Kim, Darshak Patel) The usability of a controller is essential for the success of a game. Gaming companies are constantly modifying their products to improve them. Some controllers have completely redefined controllers. Most recently, Nintendo has announced their new system/controller the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo focuses primarily on the controller; they do not focus on graphics in their promotional video. Watch the video below to see how Nintendo has redefined the video game controller and how you interact with playing. Bianchi-Berthouze, N., Kim, W. W., & Patel, D. (2007).
